Support for OECD Tests,
Sections 2-4:
Toxicity and Biodegradation

The OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals series of tests are used by various regulatory authorities around the world in the registration of industrial chemicals and polymers. ISI is experienced at carrying out these tests by Canadian standards (Spirit of GLP) and by international standards (OECD GLP). All tests require the strictest quality control and comprehensive reporting. The Guidelines are divided into 4 Sections:

Section 1: Physical-Chemical Properties
Section 2: Effects on Biotic Systems (often referred to as Ecotoxicity)
Section 3: Degradation and Accumulation (often referred to as Biodegradation)
Section 4: Health Effects (often referred to as Mammalian Toxicity)

Note: "support" refers to analytical method development, preparation and certification of stock solutions, and/or analysis (chemical confirmation and quantitation of the test substance in the test matrix) of the samples generated during the test . There are two options for running the test:

  • You manage and run the test at your facility and ISI takes care of the "support".
  • ISI manages the job and contracts the running of the test to a GLP-compliant lab that specializes in running these types of tests. ISI has an excellent working relationship with this lab, as we routinely provide "support". Our staff has experience with these tests and can provide guidance on various aspects.

Below is a description of each of the OECD Section 2-4 tests currently supported by ISI. For a more succinct listing click here.

The following Section 2 tests are currently supported by ISI:

201: Alga, Growth Inhibition Test
This test determines the effects of a test substance on the growth of freshwater microalgae and/or cyanobacteria. ISI offers support for both rangefinding and definitive test cultures.

202: Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test
This is an acute toxicity test to assess the effects of a test substance on daphnids.
ISI offers support for both rangefinding and definitive test cultures.

203: Fish, Acute Toxicity Test
This test is used to determine the LC50 of the test substance on fish.
ISI offers support for both rangefinding and definitive test cultures.

Other Section 2 tests are available upon request.
Generally speaking,
support can be done by ISI for any test that requires it. Contact us for more details.

The following Section 3 test(s) are currently supported by ISI:

301: Ready Biodegradability
This test describes 6 methods for screening of a test substance for ready biodegradability in an anaerobic aqueous medium.

Other Section 3 tests are available upon request.
Generally speaking,
support can be done by ISI for any test that requires it. Contact us for more details.

The following Section 4 tests are currently supported by ISI:

423: Acute Oral Toxicity - Acute Toxic Class Method
This test involves dosing rodents with solutions containing certain levels of the test substance and monitoring compound-related mortality.

425: Acute Oral Toxicity : Up-and-Down Procedure
This test allows determination of an LD50 in rodents by dosing them with solutions containing the test substance and monitoring compound-related mortality. There is a limit test and a main test.

475: Mammalian Erythrocyte Micronucleus Test
This in vivo test involves dosing mammals with a solution of the test substance and monitoring bone marrow and/or blood cells for the presence of micronuclei.

Other Section 4 tests are available upon request.
Generally speaking, support can be done by ISI for any test that requires it. Contact us for more details.
