Investigative Science Incorporated has a closely integrated in-house laboratory. This facility is used as both an analytical service and a base for our process studies.

ISI can carry out these tests by Canadian standards (Spirit of GLP) and by international standards (OECD GLP). ISI has been registered to the ISO 9001 standard since 1996, is ISO 17025 compliant, and holds a Health Canada Establishment Licence for analysis of pharmaceuticals. We are also an accredited verifier for the Canadian ETV program.

Typical analytical services available are:

  • analysis of a range of antibiotics and ionophores in tissue, blood and delivery preparations
  • petroleum hydrocarbons in a range of matrices
  • amines, phenols and other polar organics
  • aldehydes, organic acids, fatty alcohols and free fatty acids
  • characterization of oils as intact glycerides or free acids
  • phytosterols
  • endocrine disruptors, including Bisphenol A
  • characterization of lecithins and other phospholipids
  • volatile organics isolated from complex matrices by acid/steam distillation, head space sampling or essential oil extraction
  • lipid soluble anti-oxidants
  • structure determination and characterization of unknowns
  • expert interpretation of analyses conducted by other laboratories
  • method development

Typical laboratory-supported process studies are:

  • a simulation of automobile damage to athletic shoes in support of a civil litigation case
  • biodegradation trials of diesel fuel in soil in support of a biocell design project for an industrial client, jointly funded by NRC
  • drug stability trials
  • preparation of verified standard samples for laboratory Performance Evaluation Studies in support of a laboratory audit program
  • development and purification of drug metabolites to support regulatory approval

The analytical focus of our in-house analytical service is chromatography; including Gas Chromatography (GC), Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). These techniques are augmented by a range of apparatus for the extraction of organics from unusual matrices, including soil, burnt debris, feces, tissue, blood and plant material among others. Where other equipment or techniques are required we have an extensive network of laboratories to assist us.
